Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common procedures performed on men and women who wish to correct anatomic and functional problems of their nose. Facial features can be easily distorted by a nose that stands out. This causes several problems and a feeling of insecurity while people with a misshapen nose are often the recipients of comments that accentuate the problem and harm their self-esteem.

The modern surgical methods used by Dr. Athanasiou and Athens Beverly Hills Medical Group allow for immediate improvement of the problem. By changing the shape of the nose and correcting the anatomical as well as functional problem, the patient gets an absolutely natural appearance that is in harmony with the shape and structure of his face.

Frequent Questions

The need for such procedure shall be determined after consultation with your doctor. In Athens Beverly Hills Medical Group, it is very important for the doctors to understand exactly what facial feature is causing concerns to the patient and which part of the nose he/she wishes to improve. The technique to be followed and the anticipated result will also be discussed before surgery. An important element of rhinoplasty is to know exactly what you wish and to get the doctor’s agreement. Dr. Athanasiou shall discuss with you and give advice on what will best suit your features. The modern equipment we operate (computer-aided simulation of the result) helps the doctor-patient communication.

Rhinoplasty involves incisions inside the nose and underneath the skin. If deemed necessary, the doctor will reshape the nasal skeleton. External incisions are usually avoided and are only performed in special cases with patient’s consent.

The open structure rhinoplasty technique is used in cases of detailed reshaping of the nasal tip (i.e., when the tip of the nose is asymmetric, oversized, etc), in case of severe post-trauma lesion of the nasal skeleton (e.g. after an accident) or in revision surgery for correction of imperfections caused by previous rhinoplasty. Open structure rhinoplasty is also selected in cases of congenital abnormalities. The closed rhinoplasty procedure is used in case where the problem is identified on the nasal bridge and the nasal tip only requires minor correction. An accomplished surgeon is equally able to perform both techniques and can judge which of the two approaches will best suit the patient’s needs, in order to achieve best possible aesthetic result.

The rhinoplasty procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.

To feel more comfortable after the procedure, you must sleep on fully stuffed and plump pillows. Gauzes placed inside your nose will not allow you to breath through the nose so you will have to breathe through your mouth. This is probably the most annoying aspect of the procedure. However, when gauzes are removed you will gradually regain normal breathing pattern. In most cases, patients soon after the procedure claim able to breathe better than before surgery. This is because the shape of the nose before surgery was blocking the nasal airways.

The patient will experience swelling and ecchymosis for a certain period after surgery and will have to avoid intense activity.

Ecchymosis and oedema of the face depend on the treated problem, i.e. whether the doctor will intervene on the bone or cartilage of the nose and on the technique selected (open structure or closed rhinoplasty). This condition will subside within a week, i.e. as soon as the splint is removed from the patient’s nose, while minor oedema around the nose area will gradually subside within six months after surgery. Therefore, while improvement is immediate, nose features become thinner and are gradually highlighted. As a result, the final outcome of the procedure is visible within approximately six months to one year after surgery.

A well-trained plastic surgeon is able to diagnose and effectively treat scoliosis of the nasal diaphragm and nasal conchae hypertrophy during the rhinoplasty procedure. The nasal skeleton must be therefore treated as a whole to achieve good cosmetic and functional outcome.

The most common problem is bruising around the eyes. However, this will subside after a few weeks and can be concealed with makeup if it causes concerns.

Most of the times, patients who have been submitted to rhinoplasty go back to work after 10 days. If you are not concerned about bruises you may return to work earlier. Usually it takes 3-4 weeks to resume all regular activities.

When asked by Dr. Athanasiou, most patients state that they expected to experience more pain. The use of appropriate local anaesthesia solutions during the procedure will greatly reduce post-operative pain.

In the case of treating cosmetic problems, rhinoplasty can safely be performed after the age of 16. However, Cleft lip cases are treated at a very young age.

Hospitalisation is generally not necessary. However, in some cases the doctor may advice the patient to remain at the hospital.

The cosmetic result of this particular procedure is considered satisfactory when it appears natural, i.e. when a nose is in harmony with the other features of the face and when the plastic surgeon’s intervention cannot be seen. An experienced plastic surgeon will always keep a photo gallery that demonstrates the quality of his work.

The cost of a rhinoplasty procedure varies and depends on the surgical technique to be used. During clinical examination, Dr. Athanasiou shall decide whether he shall proceed with an open or closed rhinoplasty procedure. The cost varies in case a diaphragm lesion is diagnosed or if the length of the nose needs to be suspended or the nostrils need to be reduced. The final cost of the procedure is set during the visit to Athens Beverly Hills Medical Group and includes all expenses (lab tests, doctors’ fees, OR cost, hospitalisation cost, materials cost, post-operative care) except further hospitalisation in case the patient wishes to extend his/her stay.
