Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation

During your visit at Athens Beverly Hills Medical Group, Dr. Athanasiou, plastic surgeon, will take into account the morphology of your breasts as well as your needs and expectations and will propose the breast augmentation technique that is most appropriate for you and the implant type that will best fit your figure.

This is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery. Breast augmentation is a procedure of choice for every woman who is no longer satisfied with the appearance of her breasts. These patients wish to correct laxity or disfigurations caused by pregnancy or increase the size of their breasts (which are smaller-sized due to heredity).

Breast augmentation is a procedure performed by more than 10 million women around the world and the number increases each year. This is a proof of how important this part of the body is to women as it dominates a woman’s appearance and affects her self-confidence. This is why most women who undergo breast augmentation say that they are very satisfied with the result. This greatly contributes to good psychology.

In Athens Beverly Hills Medical Group, according to international protocols, the specialised breast surgery team carries out a clinical examination and evaluation of the patient within the overall operation scheduling.

Frequent Questions

During your visit at ABH Medical Group the plastic surgeon, Dr. Athanasiou, will determine if you can proceed with this procedure. This decision is based, to a great extent, on the medical history of the patient, whether she recently had a baby and whether she breast-fed. A mammography or ultrasound is also necessary.

Thereafter, the patient will discuss with the doctor about the exact feature that makes her feel unhappy about her breasts. Together they shall determine the appropriate shape and size of the breast implant that best fits her figure.

The size of implants depends mainly on what the patient wishes, but also on body type, i.e. chest diameter, nipple to inframammary fold distance, current breast size etc. Round or anatomical implants are also available for a more natural look. A certain type of implants allows increase or decrease of volume and size after the procedure is over. Breast augmentation is a procedure with a very high satisfaction rate.

In breast augmentation we use implants which are divided into two categories: silicone implants and saline implants. Both types are safe.

It is true that there has been a lot of discussion about silicone implant in the last few years. However, it must be made known that silicone is a material widely used in medicine and in everyday life without causing problems (silicone can be found in cosmetics as well as pharmaceutical products).

Although some women who have undergone breast augmentation have developed certain health conditions, it has not been proven that these cases are linked to silicone use and no one can guarantee that these patients had not already developed the particular condition before moving on with the procedure.

On the contrary, it has been proven that women who have undergone breast plastic surgery have 30% less possibilities of developing breast cancer. Therefore, there is no risk involved as to the patient’s health relevant to the use of silicone implants following breast augmentation. When medical evidence on the safety of silicone implants were presented, the breast augmentation procedure became one of the most popular procedures worldwide.

Women who have undergone breast augmentation are advised, as are all women, to consult a gynaecologist or breast expert for regular screening (mammography, ultrasound etc). At this point, we must emphasize that there are no problems caused by the use of silicone implants in the diagnosis of the various breast conditions. Any woman who has been submitted to breast augmentation must mention this to healthcare personnel before proceeding with a mammography or other imaging technique.

Plastic surgery procedures are advised to women who wish to proceed with reconstruction following tumour treatment (mastectomy) to gain better appearance of their breasts.

In breast augmentation we use implants which are divided into two categories: silicone implants and saline implants. Both types are safe.

When it comes to silicone implants, there are two categories available: round and anatomical implants. Anatomical implants come in the shape of a “tear” and are the “golden rule” among women who wish to get the most natural results. The use of anatomical implants allows us to correct cases of minor breast ptosis with one single incision placed on the inframammary fold. However, implant placement requires a special technique as the pocket has to be narrow in order to keep the implants from turning.

It should be noted that anatomical implants used at Athens Beverly Hills are FDA-approved and have a lifetime warranty.

Not all breast implants are the same. There are implants that are of higher quality (and more expensive) and implants of inferior quality. The final result depends on the technique used by the plastic surgeon, as well as on the type of implant to be placed. The technologically-advanced modern breast implants contain a thick silicone gel and their silicone coat is textured (Cohesive Breast Implants). FDA-approved breast implants are considered the safest.

The surgical incision, regardless of its place (inframammary fold, areola, armpit), will not exceed 4cm in length, and 2mm in width. This incision is sufficient for an experienced plastic surgeon to place the silicone implant in the right position. Usually, incisions in breast augmentation are placed underneath and around the breasts.

The incision leaves a scar that is described as a fine red line underneath the breast. Its quality depends on skin type, adherence to the doctor’s advice for post-op care and the use of special healing creams. In most cases, the scar will fade away with time. When placed in the inframammary fold, the scar is covered by the implant.

The use of self-graft is a new breast augmentation method (also used in butt augmentation). It involves the harvest of fat from the patient’s body (thighs, abdomen, hips, buttocks) on the condition that there is sufficient fat volume in the harvest area. Using a special cannula, the plastic surgeon collects the fat tissue which is then filtered and purified (the Cytori method). The pure fat graft is then injected into the woman’s breast. The new method is suggested for women who wish to have breast augmentation but with a more natural result or limited volume increase with no incisions around or underneath the breast.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia an hospitalisation is not necessary, unless the doctor decides otherwise. The procedure takes 1-2 hours.

The result of breast augmentation is visible straight after the operation. However, the final appearance of the breast can be witnessed one month after surgery when oedema has fully subsided and breasts are restored to their normal position.

Silicone implants do not hinder breast-feeding. A woman who has been submitted to breast augmentation is advised to wear a good bra during the periods of breast-feeding and pregnancy so that her breasts will be well supported.

Modern, non-trauma techniques allow us to significantly reduce pain. Moreover, there are many patients who report that they experienced very little or no pain. However, painkillers prescribed by the doctor will help to reduce pain which will fade after the first five days post-op.

Breast augmentation must be performed after the age of 18. The procedure boosts self-confidence and has a positive effect on the young woman’s personal and social life. At an older age, and usually after childbirth, breast augmentation can restore breast volume to its initial state (before breast-feeding), with simultaneous uplift of the mammary gland, in cases of slight droopiness. There is no maximum age limit for breast augmentation.

When the result appears natural and breast size is in harmony with the remaining body. Moreover, during palpation, the breast must feel soft and natural.

Most women return to work after 3 – 5 days. During the first 3 weeks intense arm movements are forbidden (exercise, weight lifting). After the first three weeks, the patient may resume all her daily activities without particular restrictions.

The cost of breast augmentation is set based on the type and quality of implants. During your consultation, Dr. Athanasiou shall evaluate the morphology of the patient’s breasts, her needs and expectations, and will suggest either an anatomical (“tear” shape) or round implant, with textured or smooth surface. Further to the above factors, breast augmentation cost also depends on whether the patient will need a simultaneous uplift. The final cost of breast augmentation is set during your visit at ABH Medical Group and includes all expenses (lab tests, doctors’ fees, OR cost, hospitalisation cost, materials cost, post-operative care) except further hospitalisation in case the patient wishes to extend her stay.
