Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty

For better results, we advise our patients not to hesitate to proceed with blepharoplasty at a young age.

The sensitive and thin skin around the eyes is the first area affected by time and is where its signs are most visible. However, the eyes are the centre of one’s personality and their appearance has a significant effect on a person’s looks. Although the first wrinkles around eyes appear after a certain age, extrinsic factors (environment, exposure to solar radiation) as well as heredity have an important role to play in premature aging of the eyelids, the formation of black circles or the so-called “bags” under the eyes.

This results in laxity of the eye muscle and quite often affects the shape of the eyes (from almond-shaped to round eyes) or even vision, when upper eyelid ptosis affects peripheral vision.

For this reason we advise our patients not to hesitate to proceed with blepharoplasty at a young age.

In ABH Medical Group, blepharoplasty is performed by the specialised plastic surgeon Dr. Athanasiou who emphasises on giving the eyes a more relaxed, younger look, positively contributing to the improvement of the overall appearance and psychology of the patient.

Frequent Questions

Any man or woman who wishes to treat the aesthetic problem of puffy eyes and droopy eyelids is a good candidate for blepharoplasty. Most patients who decide to undergo this procedure are over the age of 35. However, ptosis may develop at a younger age due to heredity. In such cases the patient may proceed with the procedure according to the advice of the plastic surgeon, Dr. Athanasios Athanasiou.

During the consultation, Dr. Athanasiou will examine the patient to see whether he or she is suffering from other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, thyroid problems, high eye pressure or dry eyes.

Each case is different. There are patients who will experience great difference if they proceed with the operation on the upper eyelid only. However, in some cases the problem is not caused by the eyelid but by the eyebrow arch (frontalis muscle) that has dropped due to time. In this case a brow lift or a combination of the two procedures will be necessary to improve the appearance of the area.

Blepharoplasty may be performed in combination with other cosmetic procedures (face lift, brow lift). In such case general anaesthesia is required. However, if the procedure is limited to the eye area only, then only local anaesthesia will be used. In any case, during your visit at Athens Beverly Hills Medical Group and your consultation with Dr. Athanasiou, you will be provided with all details on the procedure to be followed in your case.

Surgery usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes.

With time, small incisions made on the eyelids will no longer be visible. Recovery time varies among patients depending on the quality of the skin and the healing pace.

Blepharoplasty is not considered painful. A slight discomfort and feeling of tension around the eyes is normal and will subside a few days after the procedure.

The results pf blepharoplasty are visible for 10-12 years after the procedure. The skin that is removed from the area will not appear again; however, the effects of gravity and time can not be stopped. Achieving a better look and stalling the effects of aging is possible through the use of effective, modern and safe methods.

All surgical procedures entail a certain amount of risk. However, any problem that might occur is considered manageable under the monitoring and advice of the specialised plastic surgeon.

Oedemas will remain for 5-7 days although this depends on the technique and approach used by the surgeon. It is advisable that you wear sunglasses during recovery. You should also avoid lifting weights and engaging in intense activities.

<p >Blepharoplasty is a procedure of which the planning and details may be determined only during consultation with the doctor at Athens Beverly Hills Medical Group. Dr. Athanasiou, plastic surgeon, will evaluate the degree of eyelid laxity, the type of muscle and fatty tissue, the signs of skin aging and even the condition of the forehead. He will also determine the method to be followed during the procedure (e.g. whether there is need for any other surgery, such as a brow lift) and, lastly, the cost. The final cost of blepharoplasty is defined during the visit to the doctor and includes all expenses (lab tests, doctors’ fees, OR cost, hospitalisation cost, materials cost, post-operative care) except further hospitalisation in case the patient wishes to extend his/her stay.
