Belly Plasty

Belly Plasty

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims at improving the appearance of the body specifically around the abdomen. Both men and women have issues concerning their abdominal area either due to laxity or due to excess fat. With this procedure, the plastic surgeon removes excess fat and skin from the lower part of the abdomen and at the same time tightens the abdominal wall muscles.

In ABH Medical Group this procedure is successfully performed on men and women. After the procedure, patients experience a great improvement of their appearance and regain their lost self-confidence. The procedure also helps them overcome other issues such as difficulty in finding clothes, negative comments by friends and family, movement difficulties, or, in extreme cases, skin problems that are due to laxity of the abdomen.

Frequent Questions

Most of the times, abdominoplasty is a procedure of choice for women who have gone through one or several pregnancies. This way the doctor can correct both laxity and stretch marks that have possibly formed on the lower part of the abdomen. Men who experience abdominal laxity or lack of elasticity can also benefit from abdominoplasty.

The main condition for someone to proceed with such a procedure is to provide the doctor with his/her full medical history and to be in a good physical state. This is to be discussed during your first consultation with your plastic surgeon, Dr. Athanasiou.

In general however, abdominoplasty is not advisable for patients who just want to loose weight or are significantly overweight.

The main prerequisite for a smoker to be submitted to abdominoplasty is to fully refrain from smoking for at least three weeks. In any other case, the possibility of delayed incision healing is very high.

Liposuction is a procedure of choice for targeting accumulated fat around the abdomen, at the front and on the sides. It is preferred in cases of restricted skin laxity and when abdominal muscles are in a good state. In these cases, liposuction in the abdominal area can yield impressive results and there are no restrictions should the patient wish to get pregnant again soon after the procedure. However, in cases where abdominal skin laxity is apparent, as well as in cases where abdominal muscles cannot maintain a satisfactory tone (e.g. after pregnancies, hernias, major weight fluctuations etc.), then abdominoplasty is a one-way road as this is the only procedure that can treat such problems.

There are three different abdominoplasty techniques applied depending on each case. During your visit at ABH Medical Group, you and your doctor shall agree on which technique is appropriate in your case.

Classic abdominoplasty: removal of abdominal wall with incision placed above the pubic area, extending from on hipbone to the other, offering the surgeon the opportunity to remove a great amount of loose skin that is the result of pregnancies or extreme sudden weight loss that causes the so-called “hanging belly”.

Circumferential abdominoplasty: one of the major procedures in plastic surgery mainly performed on obese patients with extended laxity in many areas of the body. Skin and fat is removed from around the waist. The procedure is very often combined with simultaneous buttock and thigh lift.

Mini abdominoplasty or “Californian Tummy-Tuck”: this is the most delicate procedure of its kind, performed with a horizontal incision (similar to that of the caesarean section) placed at the lower part of the abdominal wall from where only a small volume of skin is removed. It is usually performed on women who are relatively thin and are mostly concerned about stretch marks or disfigurations of the lower part of their abdomen. The procedure can be easily combined with liposuction. The incision is relatively small and placed below the underwear line.

After this procedure the patient is required to remain at the hospital for 24 hours. This has mainly to do with the patient’s safety. While at the hospital, the patient will not make any extreme moves and will also get IV antibiotics for 24 hours (only possible at the hospital).

Incisions in abdominoplasty may be placed 5cm over the pubic line extending from one hipbone to the other. The length of the incision depends on the severity and type of the problem that needs correction. It starts from a very low point in the case of mini tummy tuck and can reach as high as the hipbone level in cases of protruding abdomen due to great weight loss.

After 7-10 days, the patient will gradually resume all daily activities.

There is no restriction. It is of course understood that you shall allow your body to heal for a reasonable period of time before getting pregnant. However, it is best if a woman chooses to undergo this procedure after her pregnancies and when she decides that she does not want to have any more children. The only reason for this suggestion is that in each pregnancy, the skin of the abdomen is greatly affected and can become saggy again.

It is safe to allow for a period of 6 months from labour.

Abdominoplasty must not be combined with any surgical procedure that focuses on abdominal contents to avoid severe post-operative complications.

A surgeon must wait for at least six months before proceeding with a second procedure on the same area.

After such a procedure, it is very important to control your weight. Exercise always helps towards maintaining a good shape. Abdominoplasty involves the removal of excess skin which will never grow back. However, sudden and extreme weight gain or a pregnancy may once again change your body’s appearance.

Abdominoplasty may be combined with liposuction. However, results are better and healing is faster when there is a significant interval between these procedures. The doctor shall decide and patient may agree on which procedure is to be performed first.

Every surgical procedure entails a certain amount of risk. However, when performed by an experienced surgeon, risk factors are significantly fewer. In general, though, this procedure does not lead to serious complications.

The cost of abdominoplasty varies and depends on the extent of the problem and on whether the patient will need a mini abdominoplasty or a regular procedure. The cost is also defined based on the extent of laxity and the dilation of the abdominal walls. The final cost of abdominoplasty is set during the visit to ABH Medical Group and includes all expenses (lab tests, doctors’ fees, OR cost, hospitalization cost, materials cost, post-operative care) except further hospitalization in case the patient wishes to extend his/her stay.
